The Adriatic - the Adriatic Sea

Bordering the states of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania and Italy lies the expanse of sea commonly referred to as the “Adriatic”. Because of its elongated shape and the surrounding masses of land and mountain, the sea here is particularly calm and well suited for undertaking relaxed sailing trips or for getting acquainted with boating in the first place. The salt content is 2.5 %, the depth between 40 and 200 metres — it is thus well suited for diving and snorkelling too, especially when one considers the variety of species of the fish and marine plant world of the 6,000 km long Croatian coast. While this is particularly impressive above all at smaller coastal places or around uninhabited islands, you will find the loveliest harbours in the cities of Split, Zadar, Dubrovnik, Rijeka and Pula — yet in between there are over 40 marinas at which you may anchor for small fees. At private marinas you can put your luck and skill at negotiation to the test in this respect — often a discount is granted. This is unusual at the ACI (Adriatic Croatia International Club) — but then the prices are too fair. Anyone arriving with their own boat should by all means carry the usual documents and have them to hand on request: personal documents of the crew and a crew list belong to these as much as a boating licence, a certificate of ownership or the like for the boat, and proof of liability insurance. If, in view of the 1,000 islands and the calm sea in this “paradise for skippers”, you want to take a boating licence in the first place, this is possible for barely 40 euros — provided you confine yourself to sailing only on this holiday and only in this region. Other, international licences you can acquire as well, but their price varies from provider to provider. Anyone who likes it especially relaxed can hire a boat with crew for 1,150–3,500 euros a week and simply be chauffeured along the loveliest spots of the Adriatic!
