Limestone, sea and no rivers - where does the fresh water on Brač come from? In 1973 a pipeline was laid on the seabed from the island to the river Cetina, and ever since the inhabitants have not had to give any thought to how much salt water they need to boil down for washing day. And visitors in particular, unaccustomed to crusts of salt on the skin, appreciate this comfort.
The White House in Washington, the Reichstag in Berlin, the parliament in Vienna and Diocletian's Palace in Split all come from Brač. For it is here that the marble-like limestone is quarried from which these famous buildings and numerous others were created. And it was not only the financial factor that decided against choosing real marble: the limestone is also very much easier to work and keeps its characteristic light colour for longer.
