Between the mountains, somewhat off to one side, the bell tower of the church of Sv. Martin rises above deserted pastures, the sea behind it and the few old cottages at its side. It is the remnant of the ambitious attempt in the 17th century to help Bobovišća to greater importance and size. Shepherds and farmers had settled here at that time, since nearby there is one of the island's few freshwater springs. But apart from them no one was drawn here. And so the project of expanding the town failed as well. Today only a few people still live in the weathered houses. They produce and sell bobbin lace and wait for the bell strokes of Sveti Martin and of Sveti Juraj, which, consecrated at the beginning of the 20th century, is still a very young church - and thus just as old as most of the villagers.
