Bol
Bol
For many, Bol is the perfect holiday resort: an unpretentious harbour where more ferries than yachts come and go, a shady pine forest in which unobtrusive hotels have been built near the beach, long, well-kept fine-gravel beaches and, of course, the golden horn invite you to long, relaxed days. So that you do not grow too idle during your visit here, you can seek out the fruit and vegetable market, the Baroque church above the harbour or the Branko Dešković gallery of modern art. Or - since we don't want to overdo it either! - have the little town train carry you there.

Sights

Dominican monastery

Daily from 10-12 and 17-20 you can visit the Dominican monastery and the museum housed in it for a small fee. The building itself was constructed around the year 1575, when several Dominican monasteries received a generous gift from the prince so as to be able to pursue their literary, philosophical and cultural research better. The missals and several works of Croatian Baroque art also date from that era. Beyond that, the museum, which to this day is maintained and run by monks, exhibits ancient amphorae and Tintoretto paintings as well as modern ecclesiastical art.

The golden horn

Croatia's most famous beach is also its most unreliable. Almost every morning the staff of the surrounding hotels have to work out a new arrangement for the sun loungers, for the golden horn changes its shape according to season, current and weather. What remains characteristic is the horn shape, reminiscent of a spit of land. Only how broad it appears, in which direction it curves and whether and how that will change further over the course of the day is impossible to predict. Your things will not, it is true, be washed away here while you go for a swim, but it is said to have happened that someone marked the finest spot with their towel in the morning and, on returning in the midday heat, had to note that not only the towel but the spot itself had vanished.
