Whether the name of the town actually goes back to the Croatian word for peace, "mir", or is rather meant to recall the first name of one of the founders of the place is immaterial - for peaceful it certainly is here: across the blue sea one spies the coastal mountains of the mainland, and at night lights glitter over from Split. The place itself has the effect, through committed and permanent renovation work, of being at once quaint and modern. At the picturesque town church villagers and strangers meet in order to spend the midday heat in the shade of the mulberry trees, and in the evening one stops off at one of the konobas or restaurants. The place is correspondingly popular among seasonal guests: here you will indeed find numerous guest rooms, guesthouses and holiday apartments, but only rarely a free one. Booking early is worth it, but anyone who no longer finds anything can also visit the place and its naturally rocky nudist beach on a day trip.
