In the second largest place on Brač tradition meets modernity: old churches and castles of the characteristic light stone shape the townscape, winegrowing and fishing are still just as important to the economy as they were decades ago, and people here really do still live in the representative buildings and town houses that elsewhere would long since have been converted into museums. On the other hand life pulsates at the harbour when the ferries from Split and Makarska dock here, the wine cellars and the international restaurants are usually packed full and the numerous visitors contribute their share to the international flair. In summer the town offers plenty of variety with a comprehensive cultural programme, and in winter one can find quiet and recuperation here.
