One comes to Skrip at sunrise and leaves the place at sunset. Hardly anyone spends the night in the oldest place on the island, which today is handled almost like an open-air museum. For what the place lacks in entertainment programme such as bars and cinemas it more than makes up for with ancient ruins. There is much to see among the picturesque farmers' huts of the local population: a relief from Roman times in the quarry, the largest Roman cemetery of the region with a church in Romanesque style worth seeing, the cyclopean walls of the Illyrian conquerors, a palace and a stronghold that was erected as protection against the Turks, and the church of Sveti Jelena - to name only a few. This Baroque church is complemented by a tower which is a popular photographic subject not only because of the small tree growing on its roof. Besides this museum-like townscape, however, the town also had an official museum built: it shows relics from Roman times, folkloric Croatian art, a number of sarcophagi and an entire, still preserved mausoleum. This museum can be visited Tuesday to Sunday from 10 to 17 hours - if you have enough time left!
