Despite its interesting location, Sucuraj is largely ignored on most travel routes. Probably because the structure of the place is not so easy to grasp as the exhibits of the big museums or works of art in medieval churches. And yet the borders that have always run through the place can still be felt today: since the stretch of land lying opposite the mainland connects two peninsulas, settlement proceeded from both sides, which naturally led to squabbles between the inhabitants. Nor did these become any fewer when in the 17th century the Dubrovnik people, Turks and Venetians drew their boundary lines through Sucuraj. And even today the 400-inhabitant village is divided: in the north live the families who have been resident for generations; in the south new houses are being built for those who love Hvar but want to keep their distance from tourism - to that extent the lack of interest in Sucuraj has its good side too.
