At the foot of the island's highest peak - 12 kilometres from the island capital
Hvar - lies the village of Sveta Nedilja. The first dwelling was offered by the slopes of St. Nikola themselves; its caves were already inhabited in the Neolithic, and in the age of the Renaissance a monastery was built on the same spot, which was actively inhabited until 1787. Today the locals use the mountain slopes above all to grow their famous wine - the best red wine in the region. People from outside do appreciate it too, but prefer to hike and climb in the mountains rather than work there - or at least resolve to do so while they let themselves tan on the village's beaches.
