Formerly the island's ferry harbour lay in Vira, the westernmost place on the island. Yet ever since
Stari Grad and
Hvar advanced to become the island's most attractive places, only walkers have strayed here. The local population too was soon drawn to larger towns - after all, there was no longer anyone here to whom they could have sold their produce at market. Today the once cosy place appears like a ghost town: the decaying houses stand in stark contrast to the flourishing landscape, and the last inhabitants keep faith with the resident innkeeper rather than with fishing.
