Vis
On the island of the same name lies the picturesque coastal town of Vis. Here the yachts lie as close together in the harbour as package tourists elsewhere on the beach, and the coastline of the town bay encloses the sea as though it would rather hide this lovely spot from the world. So far it has succeeded, for the town still counts as an insider's tip for all those who value romance and naturalness, who want to escape the hectic tumult of city life for a few days, and who seek both the merits of a place with a family atmosphere and those of all but untouched nature.
Komiza
On the western coast of the island of Vis, at the foot of Mount Hum, lies the town of Komiža, which 1,700 people call home. The little town has been known since the twelfth century, among other things for its drinking-water springs, its long pebble beaches and its enormously pleasant climate. With the mountainside at its back it never really gets cold here even in winter, and in summer the deep blue, calm sea invites everyone who cannot yet swim to change that. There is also a fishing museum here dealing with the history of the place, as well as an international ballet school whose annual performances draw lovers of dance from far away.
Rukavac
In recent years Rukavac has developed from a fishing village cut off from the rest of the world into a holiday oasis. In the bays there are fewer nets and more tourists on the beach, and off them lie uninhabited islands with singular nature. The green cave, for instance, to which boat trips are regularly offered. The former fishermen of this place in the south-east of the island of Vis have not entirely changed their "working material", though: some show the underwater fauna as diving instructors — others are now cooks.
