Only 1,400 locals still live in Komiza, which two centuries ago still counted a proud 5,000 citizens. But fish factories and vineyards do not seem to have been exactly the desired workplace for the younger generations. It does the town no harm, being after all the desired holiday place for many. So over time Komiza became a tourist place, which here is however not a synonym for huge bed-blocks and hotel complexes, but for an open, inviting way of dealing with all visitors. Visually Komiza is and remains cosy, and the streets are lined with numerous medieval buildings with whose flair no present-day architect would want to compete. Thus the Sveti Marija alone consists of three smaller churches; the castle from the year 1585 is today the seat of the fishing museum; and the Benedictine monastery, which was a home for the first settlers of the place, still stands today beside the church of Sveti Nikolas somewhat above the town among vine tendrils.
