Insider tips

Ogygia

Not only the local patriotism of the islanders but also descriptions of the landscape and the position of Mljet support the thesis that the Greek poet Homer had it before his eyes when he described the isle of the nymph Calypso, who seduced the legendary seafarer and granted him shelter. Many a visitor, at the sight of Mljet, will understand why the Greek king was stranded here for so long - yet in contrast to the mythical home of the nymphs, Mljet can be found again at any time, and you are warmly invited to come - and to go! - as you please!

Maestral

The refreshing breeze you feel on Mljet in the summer months from about 10:00 in the morning is the maestral wind, which brings good weather with it. It arises from the daily differences in temperature caused by solar radiation and accordingly grows stronger over the course of the day, but dies away completely again at sunset. Thus the perceived temperature stays almost the same at all times, and many a visitor has already been taken by surprise by a fierce sunburn. So - despite the cool air, please do not forget the sun cream!

"Great bridge" without a bridge

Anyone wanting to walk around the lakes Malo jezero and Veliko jezero can expect routes of about 2.5 km (Malo jezero) and almost 10 km (Veliko jezero) respectively. In doing so, however, you have to bear in mind that although the large lake Veliko jezero means "big bridge" in translation, there is no bridge here. It was demolished in 1960 in the course of widening the lake's opening towards the sea. The lake, being open to the sea, cannot therefore be walked around completely, and day-trippers should always allow enough time and reserves of strength for the way back - or, if need be, have themselves picked up by car at the sea shore!
