Porta Croatia Travel guide to Dalmatia

Climbing in the Paklenica park

Right at the entrance of the great gorge near the car park, the climbers and those who want to become climbers meet. In this fairly easy area sufficient safety precautions are installed for slowly getting a taste for vertical locomotion. A special attraction are the griffon vulture nests, which are located above the climbing routes. These regions are of course closed to the sportspeople, but the circling of the birds of prey and their presence in the eyrie are a welcome entertainment programme for the waiting climbing fans. The further one pushes into the national park, the more demanding the routes become: at the Rajina guesthouse professional climbers meet to lay out new routes or to browse in the extensive archive of original reports of first ascents. Renowned free climbers have left valuable tips here and done research for their own guidebooks. Particularly idyllic and aesthetic are the routes on the west face of the Anica kuk, which admittedly already require a march of several hours to get there. On this 400 m high steep face courses are also offered in summer. Anyone wanting to explore the stretch, which has already claimed some tragic victims, on their own account had best take their camping equipment along and spread the climbing and walking tour over several days. Then Vidakov kuk, Bojin kuk, Babin kuk and the walls of the small gorge are, however, unique experiences and challenges, in which one should only take care not to overestimate one's own abilities.
