Palandara beach, Arbanija

Palandara beach lies in Arbanija on the island of Čiovo, only a few minutes' walk from the Sveti Križ hotel. Right on the beach is a small beach restaurant which spoils holidaymakers with cold drinks. To the left of the beach is the monastery of Sveti Križ. Directly behind the beach are the coast road and numerous holiday houses. A Tommy supermarket is likewise very easy to reach on foot. The beach is very natural, and between the concreted bathing platforms there are again and again smaller coves which allow a gentle entry into the sea, so that the beach is to be recommended for children too. From the beach one has a view of the mainland opposite with its Kaštela and the well-known city of Split.

Island and place

Island of Ciovo

The "front garden of Trogir" is an island of 15 by 3.5 kilometres, and a good many of its houses are lived in only at weekends by well-to-do Croatians, or during the holiday season by international guests. The atmosphere is accordingly village-like, even in the parts that look like town. Those who live here all year round love the regularity with which quiet days give way to busier ones, with which the season of fishing is followed by the weeks of looking after visitors. And so Čiovo manages to receive its guests not as a disturbance but as an enrichment of the yearly cycle.

The island of Čiovo is connected to the mainland at Trogir by a bridge and is therefore quick and easy to reach. It is also ideally placed for excursions around the Split and Trogir region.

Arbanija on Ciovo

Unlike many other places in the tourist region of Dalmatia, Čiovo does not depend on outsiders — and never did. During the Ottoman campaigns a monastery was built around a generous fruit and vegetable garden that supplied all the inhabitants with food and is still tended as such today. The monastery town lost its protective character; today it holds a library, an art collection and a crucifix worth seeing, carved from the wood of local olive trees. And everyone who wants to see it is welcome, for just because you do not need guests does not mean they are not wanted.
