Slatine

Beach by the harbour

A somewhat longer stretch of beach between the quay wall of Slatine harbour and the Lumbrellin beach bar. The beach is child-friendly and very centrally placed. A supermarket, beach bars and so on are close by!

Beach by the harbour in Slatine
Beach by the harbour, Slatine

This official beach of Slatine is bounded on one side by the harbour and runs to the beach bar. This stretch is tended and kept clean by municipal staff, so dogs are not allowed. The beach is amply wide and its length spreads out the high number of visitors. It is lively, yet large enough not to feel crowded. Whether you want to lie right by the water or would rather secure a spot on one of the benches in the shade, you will almost always find something.

The beach offers families and larger groups alike enough room and freedom to spread out and pitch their camp. Many visitors to this stretch bring their own shade, for while shrubs and trees are present, only some of them are tall and dense enough to give sufficient shade.

The stretch of beach here is both stony and laid with fine pebbles. Entry slopes very gently. This makes it a popular family beach for children and parents. Even though there are no sea urchins, we recommend bathing shoes above all for children and sensitive feet. Since this stretch of beach is cordoned off in the water, no craft enter the swimming area, and the crystal-clear water does the rest for carefree snorkelling.

Midday can be spent particularly restfully here. Anyone for whom the way back to the apartment is too far can safely stay in the village centre, take lunch in one of the numerous restaurants or pizzerias and enjoy a cool drink in the shade of palms. The small supermarket with a large choice of ice creams delights young and old again and again, but cool drinks or a sweet pastry for in between can be had here too.

For older children and the young at heart who like to dive head first, the harbour wall offers a perfect jumping-off point. Locals like to use it too for leaping into the cool blue sea. In the late afternoon one can then watch the sunset from the harbour wall. A romantic spot in Slatine, but above all a meeting place for young people and young couples.

The view from this stretch of beach runs over the Kaštela to the Kozjak range and Split's own mountain, Marjan.

Island and place

Island of Ciovo

The "front garden of Trogir" is an island of 15 by 3.5 kilometres, and a good many of its houses are lived in only at weekends by well-to-do Croatians, or during the holiday season by international guests. The atmosphere is accordingly village-like, even in the parts that look like town. Those who live here all year round love the regularity with which quiet days give way to busier ones, with which the season of fishing is followed by the weeks of looking after visitors. And so Čiovo manages to receive its guests not as a disturbance but as an enrichment of the yearly cycle.

The island of Čiovo is connected to the mainland at Trogir by a bridge and is therefore quick and easy to reach. It is also ideally placed for excursions around the Split and Trogir region.

Slatine on Ciovo

The 1,200 inhabitants of Slatine unfold a rough charm in their town. Forty people here still live exclusively from fishing, and in direct "neighbourhood" hermits isolated themselves for centuries in the hermitage at the island's tip. Anyone who wants to belong here and not merely be a short-term guest has to come up with something rather special. Perhaps that is why the place grows steadily through migration, and why a good many former holidaymakers now live here all year round.
